FACIALS
A professional facial is designed not just to help you relax, but to help improve your skin.
BEST FACIALS FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE
Facials are usually considered a luxury or a treat for a special occasion, but in reality, facials are an important part of healthy skincare. Like anything else, regular treatments help you maintain healthier skin all around and combat some of the early signs of aging and other skin concerns.
Facials aren’t one-size-fits-all, however. Getting a facial that isn’t right for your skin type can have the opposite effect of glowing, healthy skin, so it’s best to choose a facial that’s designed for your specific skin type.
Kayy’s Makeup ONLY provides certain facials. Facials recommended below are not all offered by Kayy’s Makeup.
BASIC STEPS TO FACIALS
-
It is really important to cleanse your face thoroughly to remove any dirt, makeup or product build-up before you start with your facial. Wiping off any makeup residue from the face using pre cleanse. Then use an oil-based cleanser or any facial oil gently clean your skin surface using special cleanse. It will help get rid of every ounce of dirt and give your esthetician a clean slate to work on.
-
The second step is to exfoliate. Exfoliating skin with a mild scrub helps remove dead skin cells, polish the skin and making it brighter. Your esthetician will take a pea-sized amount of the exfoliate and rub it gently onto face and neck in a circular motion.
-
Time for some pore cleaning! After exfoliating, next comes the steam. It helps the pores to open and makes skin absorbent for the products to follow. Heat is also good for the skin as it makes skin relaxed and moist. This step does wonders for oily and acne-prone skin. Boil water in a steamer and take steam for 5-10 minutes.
-
Extraction is the process of clearing a clogged or compacted pore by manual or mechanical means. Extractions are often performed as part of a facial. Most people need at least a couple of extractions during each facial, though you may require more extractions if this is your first facial.
-
No facial is complete without a facial massage (expect express facial) and, let’s be honest, this is the most fun part of the treatment. This step is essential to increase blood circulation and improve muscle tones, which keeps skin firm and bright.
-
Hot towels help remove product from the skin. Not only does it remove product, the warmth of the towel can relax the facial muscles, increase circulation, and soften the skin. Plus, it just feels great!
-
After massage, your skin needs something nourishing and moisturizing. Face masks get all the impurities out and give its radiance back. Enjoy some relaxed time while your skin relaxes as well.
-
An essential part of your skincare routine, toning is also very important in facial. Now that your skin has absorbed the nutrients and goodness of the face masks, toner would help to close and clean the pores. It also restores the balance of the skin and is essentially beneficial for acne-prone skin as it doesn’t let the dirt settle in on the skin. It shrinks and tightens pores that were opened during the steam and leaves skin clean and bright. The toner bring skin back to its pH balance to avoid any irritation from your skin after cleansing, massage, and mask.
-
Wrap up your facial with a soothing moisturiser. Cleansing and steam dries out the skin in the process and thus the facial needs to end with moisturising skin. This last step hydrates the skin and helps to retain and sealing in the moisture it lost. The moisturizer is gently massaged onto face and neck. Let it absorb in the skin.
-
SPF is short for sun protection factor, and the higher the number that follows it, like SPF 50 for example, the more time you may be able to spend in the sun without getting sunburnt from its ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. If you book an appointment at night, SPF will not be applied.
-
Strengthens skin's barrier around the eyes to minimize appearance of lines + wrinkles, nourishes + brightens skin for refreshed, younger-looking eyes.
It typically take for users to see results from eye treatments and enhancers 4-8 weeks.
WHAT’S MY SKIN TYPE?
-
Combination skin: This skin type is oily in some areas and dry in others. Usually, you’ll see large pores around the nose and small pores elsewhere, and you may have dry patches in some areas.
-
Dry skin: Dry skin usually feels tight and rough, or it may have issues with cracking or peeling. Generally, pores are small, and your face will feel tight and uncomfortable after washing.
-
Oily skin: As expected, oily skin has excess oil all over the face. Those with oily skin usually have large pores that are easily clogged, as well as blackheads, whiteheads and cystic acne. Washing only brings temporary relief before the oil comes back.
-
Sensitive skin: Sensitive skin is often red and irritated, and it may even itch or sting. Pores can be any size. In most cases, washing leads to worse irritation and patches of itchy skin.
-
Normal skin: Normal skin has a normal pH balance, meaning it’s neither oily nor dry, and the pores are a normal size. Regular washing keeps normal skin clean and healthy.
-
If you have skin that feels drier, dehydrated, and feels as though it might be losing its 'bounce,' then your skin could be considered 'mature. ' You should also be on the lookout for signs such as dullness, lack of tone, deeper set wrinkles, as well as hyperpigmentation and age spots.
-
Acne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. Sebum—oil that helps keep skin from drying out—and dead skin cells plug the pores, which leads to outbreaks of lesions, commonly called pimples or zits.
-
Textured skin is the term given to skin that appears raised or uneven in certain areas. Textured skin can appear anywhere on the body, but you're more likely to notice it on your face where it may feel bumpy and dry to the touch. It's often the result of enlarged pores, acne, or acne scarring.
TYPES OF FACIALS

Comination
Because combination skin has oily and dry areas, as well as acne in some cases, the different areas of the face need to be treated differently. Fruit facials or microdermabrasion treatments are effective, as well as extractions for the congested area of the face.
Below are a few examples but not limited to, of facials to get. If you have acne/texture, mature skin you can still get those facials as well.

Dry
For normal to dry skin, choose a facial that includes deep cleansing, a moisturising massage and steam treatment to remove extra dirt. Opt for a moisturising mask or a hydrating serum to finish off. If your skin is on the dry side, avoid too much exfoliating.
Below are a few examples but not limited to, of facials to get. If you have acne/texture, mature skin you can still get those facials as well.

Dry skin has less oil, so it’s prone to dehydration. This slows the body’s natural exfoliating process down, leading to a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface that can dull the appearance. A facial that includes gentle exfoliation and a deep-penetrating mask to restore lost moisture is the best facial for dry skin.

Sensitive
Sensitive skin requires a gentle facial with mild enzymes and cleansers that are less likely to cause irritation. Products that are free of fragrances or harsh chemicals are important, as well as an aesthetician that isn’t too aggressive.
Below are a few examples but not limited to, of facials to get. If you have acne/texture, mature skin you can still get those facials as well.

What is microdermabrasion?
-
In microdermabrasion, a special machine applies a slightly rough applicator tip (either composed of tiny rough particles or a diamond tip) to the surface of the skin of the face or neck to remove the uppermost layer of skin. This results in a smoother skin texture. The procedure is painless and non-invasive. Multiple sessions may be required in some cases.
-
Microdermabrasion is appropriate for the following conditions:
Acne scars
Hyperpigmentation
Melasma
Sun-damaged skin
Wrinkles
-
Patients with any of the following conditions may not be good candidates for microdermabrasion:
Active rosacea
Fragile capillaries or vascular lesions
Active onset acne
Warts
Open sore
Psoriasis
Lupus
Uncontrolled diabetes
Susceptibility to cold sores (unless treated with antiviral therapy by the doctor)
-
Before the procedure, an ASDS dermatologist will review the patient’s medical history and conduct an exam. This is the time for the doctor and patient to discuss expectations, potential risks and outcomes of the procedure.
Potential concerns and tips:
Patients who have had recent chemical peels, neuromodulator injection therapy or other skin procedures, should consult with their doctor before receiving microdermabrasion.
Avoid exfoliating creams (especially prescription tretinoin or other acne products) for three days prior to treatment.
Avoid sun exposure prior to or immediately after treatment.
Avoid waxing prior to or immediately after treatment.
Cleanse face and neck with a non-oily, non-soap based cleanser before treatment.
-
Microdermabrasion recovery time is generally minimal. Patients should:
Keep new skin clean, moisturized, and protected with sunblock.
Apply anti-inflammatory creams or cold compresses as need.
Use a gentle cleanser.
Avoid scratching or picking new skin.
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least seven days.
Avoid glycolic, beta hydroxy, retinol, benzyl peroxide and similar medications for one to two days following treatment.
Avoid appling prescription retinoid products for three to seven days after treatment. Patients receiving a series of treatments should not resume retinoids until after the final treatment, unless directed differently by their doctor.
-
The procedure is painless and typically no anesthetics are required.
Skin irritation
Infection
-
6-8 treatments.
What is Ultrasonic?
-
Using a machine that emits high-frequency sonic waves, ultrasonic facial procedure cleanses, repairs and stimulates the skin tissue. The ultrasonic facial is a medically proven treatment that uses ultrasound waves to loosen and remove dead skin cells and restore the natural vibrancy.
-
In addition to getting all of the bad stuff out of your skin, this facial will also help your skin to appear clearer and brighter after just a few treatments. If you want to take your results to the next level, you can add a chemical peel once you complete your ultrasonic facial treatment.
Another benefit of this facial is that it can work wonders for individuals suffering from acne since it gets down deep into the skin to remove the dirt that could be causing acne in the first place.
Unlike microdermabrasion, you will not experience redness after the procedure even though you are still getting a deep clean. This is an added bonus if you have to be somewhere directly after your appointment.
Getting all of the bad stuff out of your skin can also reduce the size of your pores! Who doesn't want smaller pores? While this stimulation is happening, it will encourage your skin to produce collagen which can make your skin appear refreshed and healthy!
Lastly, mentioned previously that ultrasonic is often associated with skin tightening. While this is not the primary reason for using this technique in facials, it can also help to tighten the skin which is a benefit for those seeking anti-aging properties from their facials.
What Are Chemical Facials?
-
Chemical facials, also known as chemical peels, are facial treatments that use chemical solutions to remove the outermost layer of skin. The chemical solution is applied to the skin, where it works to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be easily sloughed off.
The exact chemical formation of the solution used in a chemical facial can vary depending on the desired depth of the peel and the specific skin concerns being addressed. Some common ingredients used in chemical peels included AHA, BHA, TCA, PHENOL.
During a chemical facial, the solution is applied to the skin and left on for a specific amount of time, depending on the desired depth of the peel. After the solution is removed, the skin may appear red and flaky for several days as the outermost layer of skin peels away, revealing smoother, more youthful-looking skin beneath. It’s important to follow the post-treatment instructions provided by the esthetician or therapist to ensure proper healing and to avoid potential complications.
-
AHAs, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, are often used in mild to moderate chemical peels. They work by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, helping to improve the skin’s texture and tone.
AHA chemical peels are the only chemical peels that are offered by an esthetician. BHA's and TCA's chemical peel's are only provided in a med spa.
-
BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are often used in chemical peels for acne-prone skin. They work by penetrating deep into the pores to dissolve excess oil and dead skin cells, helping to prevent breakouts and improve the appearance of acne scars.
AHA chemical peels are the only chemical peels that are offered by an esthetician. BHA's and TCA's chemical peel's are only provided in a med spa.
-
TCA is a medium-depth chemical peel that is often used to address fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and uneven skin tone. It works by penetrating deeper into the skin to stimulate collagen production and encourage cell turnover.
AHA chemical peels are the only chemical peels that are offered by an esthetician. BHA's and TCA's chemical peel's are only provided in a med spa.
-
Phenol is a deep chemical peel that is used to address more severe skin concerns, such as deep wrinkles, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation. It works by penetrating the skin’s deeper layers to stimulate collagen production and promote new skin cell growth.
These are only done in a physician office. Kayy’s Makeup does not offer these.
-
Chemical facials, also known as chemical peels, have several benefits including-
1. Improving skin texture– Chemical facials can improve skin texture by removing dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and stimulating collagen production.
2. Reducing fine lines and wrinkles– Chemical facials can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting the production of new skin cells and collagen.
3. Treating acne– Chemical facials can help treat acne by unclogging pores, reducing inflammation, and promoting the shedding of dead skin cells.
4. Reducing pigmentation– Chemical facials can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, such as age spots, sun spots, and melasma, by removing the outer layer of skin that contains excess pigment.
5. Brightening skin tone– Chemical facials can help brighten skin tone by promoting the growth of new, healthy skin cells.
6. improving hydration
It’s important to note that while chemical facials can provide many benefits, they are not suitable for everyone. It’s important to consult with a qualified dermatologist or aesthetician before undergoing any type of facial treatment to determine if it’s right for you.
-
While chemical facials have many benefits, they can also have some potential disadvantages or side effects, such as-
1. Redness and irritation– Chemical facials can cause temporary redness, irritation, and sensitivity to the treated area. This is more common in people with sensitive skin or those who have had a deep peel.
2. Skin damage– Chemical facials involve the use of acid solutions that can cause skin damage if not used properly. Over-exfoliating can cause burns, scarring, or hyperpigmentation, especially on darker skin tones.
3. Increased sensitivity to sunlight– Chemical facials can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, making it more susceptible to sunburn and other types of skin damage. It is important to use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight after a chemical peel.
4. Not suitable for all skin types– Chemical facials may not be suitable for all skin types, especially those with a history of severe acne, eczema, rosacea, or other skin conditions.
5. Multiple sessions may be required– Depending on the severity of the skin concern, multiple sessions of chemical facials may be required to achieve the desired results.
Overall, chemical facials can be beneficial for many people when performed by a trained and experienced professional. However, it’s important to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits before undergoing any facial treatment.
-
Chemical peels are best for people with fair or lighter skin tones. If you have a darker skin tone, the procedure may leave the tone of your skin uneven
-
Schedule chemical exfoliation treatments in a series of 4-8 sessions. The type of chemical exfoliation determines the frequency. Schedule chemical exfoliation services ever 14 davs. A series of treatments ever 3-4 months is the tvpical recommendation. Treatments can also be scheduled once a month as needed. The schedule depends on the product strength and the your tolerance to chemical exfoliation treatments.
DO’S AND DONT’S
BEFORE: HOW TO PREPARE FOR A FACIAL
You can ensure you have a positive facial experience and get maximum benefits by preparing for your treatment. The first step is understanding what to expect before and during your appointment.
If this is your first facial, you may not realize that you’ll most likely be asked to get undressed (down to your underwear) and put on a robe, even if you aren’t there for a body treatment. If you’re comfortable with it, you can also take off your bra, which will make it easier for your esthetician to apply serums and other products to your décolletage.
Most facials include cleansing, exfoliation, steaming, extractions, product application, and facial massage, though this can vary depending on the treatment you get. You’ll have time to speak to your esthetician about your skin concerns and regular skincare routine. This is a great time to ask any questions about the treatment process.
Now that you have an idea of what to expect before and during your facial, it’s time to jump into the details of how to prepare your skin prior to treatment. Read on for a comprehensive list of dos and don’ts before a facial.
Pre-Facial Dos and Don’ts
There are several things you should (and shouldn’t!) do before a facial. Follow these tips to ensure you get the most out of your professional facial treatment.
Dos:
Wash your face gently so you arrive with clean skin. Your esthetician needs a clean slate to work with.
Continue with your normal morning skincare routine, except for masks, peels, or deep exfoliation. It’s fine to moisturize and use sunscreen, but skip any treatments as these may interact negatively with your facial.
Create a list of the skincare products and ingredients you’re currently using. This helps your esthetician understand your current skincare habits and make recommendations or adjustments to improve your routine.
Drink plenty of water so you’re well hydrated, but not so much that you have to run to the bathroom in the middle of your appointment!
Take some time to relax so you don’t go into your appointment stressed out. Facials are just as much about relaxing self-care as they are about healthy skin.
Don’ts:
Don't wear makeup to your appointment. Your esthetician can’t treat your skin until your face is clean.
Don't changes to your skincare routine a week or sooner before your appointment. If you change up your routine, you won’t know if your post-facial results are because of the treatment or one of the changes you made.
Don't any intensive or invasive skincare treatments, like facial masks, peels or peel-off masks, or exfoliating treatments. Also, make sure to stop using chemical exfoliants and potential irritants a week or so before your treatment. This can irritate the skin when combined with facial treatments.
Don't shave or wax any treatment areas like brows, face, lips, legs, or bikini line. You don’t want to make your skin extra sensitive before a professional facial or body treatment.
Don't forget to tell your esthetician about any medications you’re taking and any allergies you have. Your esthetician must know about any potential issues before they get started.
Don't schedule your appointment too close to a major event. Depending on the type of treatment you get, you could experience redness or peeling for a few days after. Book your appointment about five to seven days before your event.
Don't drink caffeine too close to your appointment time. It can cause facial twitching or make it hard to relax.
AFTER: WHAT TO DO AFTER A FACIAL
Some facials, such as laser treatments or chemical peels, require downtime afterward. This can be anywhere from 24 hours to two weeks. During this time, your skin will be red and possibly peeling, so it’s a good idea to clear your calendar of any social events for that time period.
Post-Facial Dos and Don’ts
No matter what treatment you get, you can follow the post-facial dos and don’ts below to ensure excellent, long-lasting results.
Dos:
Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and help flush out toxins.
Try not to touch your face or other treated areas, and skip any at-home facial massage. Your skin may be sensitive, so a hands-off approach is best.
Avoid makeup for at least the rest of the day. While this isn’t 100% necessary, applying makeup right after a facial is not ideal and may clog your recently deep-cleaned pores.
Wait at least two to three days before using skincare treatments or products that could irritate your skin or increase skin sensitivity. That means no toners, exfoliants, new products, or acne treatments. You should also avoid products with vitamin C and retinol.
Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid high heat. Some products used during your treatment may make you more sensitive to the sun.
Make sure to use a clean pillowcase and clean towels. This will help keep dirt and oils out of your pores.
Don’ts:
Don't wash your face or take a shower until at least six hours after your treatment. The serums and treatments need to have time to absorb into your skin completely.
Don't exercise right after your treatment. Sweating will remove the serums that are still being absorbed into your skin.
Don't swim or apply water or steam to your face until at least six hours after your treatment. As with exercise and sweating, applying water or steam will remove the skincare products before they’re fully absorbed.
Don't pick at your skin. While you should never do this, it’s especially important to avoid it after a facial when your skin is at its most sensitive.
Don';t wax, shave, or pluck hair in the treated area for at least a few days after treatment, as this can inflame your hair follicles.
Forget to follow the post-facial care instructions provided by your esthetician.
1. Keep it clean. When is the last time you disinfected items you're in close contact with?
If you’re going to receive a facial, it’s important to disinfect any objects that could come into contact with your face afterward, such as your pillows or your phone. You don’t want any bacteria transferring onto your face!
To disinfect your phone, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol or make a disinfecting wipe from vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. To disinfect your pillows, you should wash your pillowcases with hot water, and put the pillows themselves in the dryer for 30 minutes on high heat.
2. Drink PLENTY of water.
Your skin can’t function properly without the water that hydrates it. And it can’t take in all those good-for-it ingredients if your pores are clogged. So, even if you’re used to relying on a mask or a serum to infuse your skin with life-giving hydration, you need to be sure to drink water throughout the day.
3. Avoid the sun.
After getting a facial, it’s best to stay out of the sun for at least a week to avoid irritating the skin. Use a hat to protect yourself from the sun right after treatment, and always apply sunscreen throughout the day.
4. Avoid using active ingredients for 48 hours.
It’s important to steer clear of active ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, and retinol while your skin is still vulnerable. Avoid using any exfoliating cleansers or products during this time. High-impact activities that cause perspiration and sebum can also cause irritation, so it’s best to steer clear of those as well.
5. No hot water on your face.
The key to getting the maximum benefit from a facial is to allow your skin time to absorb the products. You may be tempted to wash your face immediately after a facial, but you should try to resist this urge. If you do, you risk washing away the wonderful products that your skin has just absorbed.
6. Schedule hair removal wisely.
Don’t wax your face immediately after getting a facial. Make sure to take care of any hair removal/waxing beforehand, and if possible do this 24 hours before a facial. Your skin is more sensitive immediately after a facial, and the waxing process can aggravate the skin. This can lead to redness, irritation, and ingrown hairs.
7. Always avoid touching your face, but especially post-facial.
Your skin may feel wonderful, but touching it will prevent the skincare products from doing their job. You also don’t want to get any dirt or contamination onto your freshly clean skin via your fingers!
8. While pores are open and freshly clean, go makeup free.
The steam and thorough cleaning will have opened your pores, and a lot of cosmetic products have the potential to clog pores. After a good cleansing, give your skin a chance to breathe.
9. Skip the workout this time.
This is your guilt-free excuse to skip the gym just this once. It’s best to avoid exercising the same day as a facial since sweating can irritate your skin and counteract the benefits of the products used. You want to keep your skin cool and under control while it’s soaking up all those beneficial ingredients!

While the effects of a facial aren’t permanent, extending that post-facial glow is possible with the right habits. Here are a few tips to keep your skin looking fresh for days to come.
-Maintain a regular skincare routine. At the most basic level, cleanse, moisturize and protect your face with mild products that will not irritate fresh skin. Since your face underwent a specialized treatment, avoid products like alcohol-based toners, scrubs and deep exfoliators.
-Hydration is key. Choose products containing hyaluronic acid to help bind water to the skin and protects its moisture barrier.
-Protect your fresh new face. Your skin will be extra sensitive after undergoing a facial. Fresh skin is more susceptible to damage caused by UVA and UVB rays. Wear a hat outdoors and use sun care products containing SPF of 30 or higher every day, rain or shine.
